1. PrezSays: Sharing Experiences In Project Management
Many people through years of experience in project management and life in general have developed work practices and specific knowledge that would aid others in their job performance. Since the 1960s, project management has been in a state of continuous development – primarily the advances have been made through work experiences and secondarily through research of work practices. Sharing of these lessons learned and advanced practices is the key to helping others excel in project management.
One pundit claimed that experience comes from making mistakes and learning through those mistakes. Another person posted on the wall something from his grade school experiences that stated, “I learn through my mistakes, so don’t criticize me when I do so. I do not learn when I get things right.” On the other hand, there are good practices that are developed through dedicated work efforts, but perhaps not as easily identified as the mistakes..

2. asapm Virtual Congress Update, Registration Opens Soon for May 10 Event
The American Society for the Advancement of Project Management (asapm), together with the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs (UCCS) and several other universities, has announced its first Virtual Congress, Managing Virtual Team Projects and Processes.
We have had good response to our Call For Papers from the Academic community, and we have not had the response we want from practicing Project Managers. Thus, we are extending the deadline for the Call For Papers. A very interesting suggestion from one practitioner, Les Squires, who uses Group Commons to support just this type of collaboration, is to make the entire process collaborative, from registration through the Congress, and beyond. We are working with Les, who will also present, to see how we can make this happen. Thanks Les!
The aim of the Congress is to use the latest virtual meeting technologies to present and discuss concurrent distributed meetings and project teams. This will allow academics and PM practitioners to discuss issues and best practices related to virtual teams and their processes. Participants will include universities and enterprises capable of supporting full motion video, and individuals at work stations with high speed connections.
Links: read the Virtual Congress Call For Papers; see the Congress Brochure; go to the Congress 2007 web site. This is your best chance this year to literally network with asapm and leaders in Project Management!

3. Board Nominations Open: Serve Your Society!
Are you satisfied with the speed of asapm's efforts to advance the state of the practice of Project Management? Neither are we! In 2007 we are increasing our efforts to get all asapm members involved in one or more of the Project Teams that are hard at work. Of course, the best way to get engaged is to run for asapm Board of Directors.
The asapm Board positions up for election in 2007 are Vice President and Director of Standards. Click either link to see the position's responsibilities. Stacy Goff has served as Vice President for two full terms, and is not eligible to serve again. The Director of Standards position is currently open. The preferred path to the Board is to first serve on one of the Project Teams (our term for committees) in that area. Each year, approximately one-third of the asapm offices open for nominations. We are also soliciting volunteers to serve on the 2007 asapm Elections Committee.
asapm's efforts are all volunteer-based. The current Project Teams that need members, in addition to Elections, include Marketing, Standards, Website, Newsletter, and Certification. In addition, there is a World Of Project Management Atlas team, and a PM Methodology team that is just starting up. To join one of the Project Teams, either contact the responsible Board member, or Contact asapm.

4. Bill Duncan: Certification Program on the March!
Certification is a chicken-and-egg issue. Until there are substantial numbers of people certified, it can be hard to get people interested. And if people aren’t interested, it’s hard to generate substantial numbers of people certified! But since the certification program volunteers know the answer to this apparent enigma (see below), we soldier on!
One of the things we plan to do to accelerate the program is to offer deep discounts in order to build our numbers. After all asapm’s program is based on the Four Level Certification of IPMA (4-L-C), and IPMA’s program is the world’s largest project management certification program outside the USA and Canada! If you think your employer might be interested in getting at least 10 people certified at IPMA Level D, asapm Certified Project Associate, knowledge-based exam, no prerequisites) or at least 5 at IPMA Level C or B (asapm Certified Project Manager and asapm Certified Senior Project Manager, competence-based assessment, demonstrated experience as a project manager required), please contact Bill Duncan for pricing and availability. We’ll make it worth your while!
asapm Certified Project Associate, IPMA-D. Belinda Walden has recently volunteered to serve as Program Manager for the Level D program. She and her team are in the process of developing a plan for 2007 that will see an expanded marketing program as well as an updated website. Belinda has already recruited Rita Glynn Smith, to help provide more viisbility for the Level D program. If you are interested in working with Belinda, please contact her through our Certification organization.
By the way, by the time you read this, we should have over 100 IPMA-Ds!
Certified Project Manager (IPMA-C). We expect to have applications and pricing available for this program before the end of March. Keep your eyes on the Certification section!
Certified Senior Project Manager (IPMA-B). We piloted this program last Fall, and the key finding was that we need to provide more and better guidance about what projects will qualify at this level, and what kinds of information we need from the candidates. These revisions are underway, and we hope to have the necessary material available by the end of April.
Administration. If an army runs on its stomach, a certification program runs on its practices and procedures. Lew Ireland had a few spare moments in his hectic schedule and has been working to enhance our quality manual. Thanks, Lew!
Oh yes, the chicken and egg: For those of you who don’t know, the egg came first … there were reptiles (or dinosaurs depending on your view of natural history) who laid eggs before there were chickens! Now if you had asked which came first, the chicken or the chicken egg, that depends on how you define “chicken,” “egg,” and “chicken egg”!
And Thank You, Bill and the Certification Board! — asapm Editor.

6. Ireland & Henrie Article; Project Management: Creating Value
asapm President Lew Ireland and Marketing Director Morgan Henrie wrote this article for the 2005 Annual Project Management Day. asapm was the first participant in this interesting event, but we never got a copy of the article for our website. Lew got us a copy, so here it is. Note that the dynamic duo wrote the article just after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans; we've updated the reference, but the message is still the same.
From the Intro: How often do you see or hear the phrase, “Project Management brings value to the organization”? Or, how often do you receive an invitation to an all day or multiple day session on how to add value to your organization through project management? A classic example is the recent invitation seen within a major oil company: “You are invited to attend an all day working session on the value of project management within your organization.”
See the rest of Lew's and Morgan's Article.

9. More Treats: Job Openings, PMForum Update, More PM Podcasts
A. Jobs
The new year is seeing the action pick up a bit on the Jobs Board. Here's one for you: Project Coordinator at COSMOLAB, INC., in Lewisburg, TN (South of Nashville). Wow! A chance to work in the Cosmetics Manufacturing industry! Note to potential job posters: We give priority to position openings that cite advanced competence-based PM Certifications, such as the internationally-recognized ones from International Project Management Association and from asapm.
B. PMForum
PMForum has been a Strategic Partner of asapm for years, because this site has always been an even-handed view of the practice of today's Project Management. Lately, under David Pells, they have been significantly expanding their footprint. For example, they have just announced a Strategic Partnership with IPMI, the Ireland member of IPMA, and a great friend of asapm. PMForum has beefed up their academic board of International reviewers, and are enroute to becoming a juried publication, for those who have interest in being published in such a publication.
They have recently increased their International coverage, with highly-skilled correspondents from all over the World. In the midst of all this change, here are several things we have missed:
C. The PM Podcast
Here is an update to Cornelius Fichtner's The PM Podcast mentioned in the last newsletter. In episode 046 (and 047) Tom Mochal speaks up about Scalable Project Management Methodologies. Tom is a good source for this topic, as his TenStep process is one of the few that is scalable—and, Tom has steered clear of the inept mistake many of his competitors make, using Process Groups as Phases.
If you missed it, pick up The PM Podcast with our great friend Max Wideman in episode 050. And, Stacy Goff distinguished between Competence-based or Knowledge-based PM Certifications in episode 055.
